What Should You Do About Flickering Lights?

When should I be concerned about flickering lights?

Flickering lights could be useful around the holidays or in a Halloween decoration however times flickering lights could indicate some type of issue. While most of these issues are not very serious or cause for major concern you should know what some of the causes could be.

Loose bulb

What are the most common reasons your light bulb is flickering? is it loose? For a variety of reasons such as the passing of time or movement of the light fixture itself, a bulb can come loose. A loose bulb that is not tightly fastened will flicker until it is screwed back in. Keep in mind that you should turn the light fixture off before tightening the bulb.

LED or fluorescent bulbs

With a fluorescent light, some flickering can occur right after turning the light on.  Fluorescent bulbs could even flicker if the ballast that they are connected to is failing. As far as LED lights if they are improperly connected or have dimming systems that aren’t right for the type of light the light could flicker. While these are not serious electrical issues you should consider upgrading or replacing them.

Light switch

If your light switch isn’t working properly or has a loose connection it could not be connecting properly with the bulb causing it to flicker. Try turning off your light switch and leaving it off for a few minutes. This could solve the problem. If this happens repeatedly you should connect and contact an electrician for repair.

Loose wiring

Wires that are loose are a major safety concern. Not only can they cause flickering lights but they are one of the more common reasons that houses catch on fire. If you see or suspect loose wiring be sure to contact an electrician for safe and professional repair.

Fluctuation in voltage

If you turn on a larger appliance in your home or another item that has a higher wattage and your lights begin to flicker this could be that the voltage is fluctuating. The flickering may only last while you’re using the appliance. However, if the flickering continues it could indicate a more serious problem. If your lights randomly dim or burn out often this could be another sign of a voltage issue. If you suspect any type of issues with voltage or if your lights flicker often when appliances are being used you need to contact a licensed electrician to check out and expertly solve the issues.
